- EARN : European Academic Research Network, basically the European
equivalent of
BITNET.
- Echo : A message area on a Fidonet BBS as well as the return of a
transmitted signal to its
source.
- Editor : A program that is used to create, edit and save documents.
Simple editors are
usually built into
e-mail and Usenet programs.
- EFF : Electronic Frontier Foundation, a US organization that
addresses the social and legal
issues arising from
the increased use of computer communications.
- EMACS : One of the most common editors found on online systems.
- E-mail : Electronic Mail. A method of sending messages via computer
and one of the most
popular and important uses
of computer communications.
- Encryption : A method of coding data to prevent unauthorized
access, most commonly used
on the Internet to protect
e-mail from prying eyes. See also Cryptography.
- Equalization : A compensation circuit built into some modems to
offset distortion caused by
the telephone channel.
- Error Checking : A method of detecting errors during data
transmission that is employed by
many modems, as well
as by TCP on the Internet.
- Error Control : A variety of different techniques which check the
reliability of characters or
blocks of data.
- Ethernet : A type of high speed local area network.
- Etiquette : See Netiquette
- Eudora : A popular electronic mail program dEnterSoftgned for Internet
use on a wide variety of
computer platforms.
- E-Zine : An electronically distributed fanzine.
