Welcome to esn.net's Glossary of Internet Terms, a plain english and hopefully common sense explanation
of internet terms and definitions. New users can familiarize themselves with the complicated
terminology used on the Internet. All entries have been organized alphabetically.

- National Science Foundation : A U.S Government agency that was
instrumental in the
development of the Internet which still administers one of the
Internet's important backbones, the NSFNET.
- NCSA : The National Centre for Supercomputing Applications, and the
developers of the
Mosaic World Wide Web Browser.
- Net : Generally used as another name for the Internet.
- Netfind : A service that helps find e-mail addresses for people on
the Internet.
- Net God : Someone who has achieved a "Godlike" status on the
Internet, either though the
development of part of the Net or tools used in it.
- Net Guru : An Internet expert, someone who is respected for their
knowledge of the Internet.
A Net Guru may be the author of an Internet book
or two, an Internet journalist, or more commonly someone who commands great
respect on the Internet,
due to the sharing of their knowledge with others.
- Net Police : A term applied to those people who feel it is their
duty to tell others how they
should behave in Cyberspace.
- Net Surfer : Someone who "surfs" the Internet, wandering around
looking for interesting
places to visit, useful files to grab, and new people to
talk to.
- Netiquette : Etiquette of the online community.
- Network : A group of computers that communicate with each other.
- Network News : Transfer Protocol NNTP, this is the protocol used
for distribution of Usenet
Newsgroups.
- Newbie : Someone who is a newcomer to a Usenet group, or someone
who is just starting out
on the Internet.
- Newsgroup : A message area, defined by subject matter, which forms
part of Usenet.
Newsgroups are composed of a number of articles, or messages,
which are posted by Usenet participants.
- Newsreader : Program used to read and post to any Usenet
newsgroups.
- NFS : Network File system which allows use of files on remote
network machines as if they
were on your local machine.
- NIC : Network Information Centre.
- Node : A computer attached to a network.
- NSFNET : National Science Foundation Network is one of the networks
that makes up the
Internet.
- Null Modem : A cable used to directly connect two computers by
their serial ports in which
the transmitting and receiving pins are swapped.
- Numeric Database : A database containing specific numbers.
